As most now know, the 2016 Dodge Viper ACR has set 13 track records out of 13 attempts. Among those is the record for Laguna Seca, which was previously held by the million dollar Porsche 918.

Motortrend recorded data of the record setting run and compared that to that of the 918 as well as the (now) third fastest car around the track, the McLaren P1.

The main difference with the 918 is that the 918 can be refined, confortable and driven everyday. This... Well... I’d drive it every day, granted that I can afford retiring in 5 years due to heavy back pains lol :)

Well, the Viper has gone through way more engineering hours than the 918. It’s came from a crude tube chassis to a race honed chassis.

and i see your friend goes to SF Cars and Coffee...

While this applies to the older Vipers, the 5th gen is honestly just as comfortable as any Maserati, GTR. or Lambo I have sat in. Truly a refined car that punches wayyyyy above it’s weight.

Yes, but I highly doubt this specific version of the Viper is in anyway as confortable... Also if you have ever driven a car with 295 in the front, they are absolutly horrible to drive daily. Just keeping the damn thing straight is a struggle unless you drive on a perfectly flat road... I had 265 front on my Corvette and it was quite messy already. 295 would be really crazy.

Trucks have a different shape of wheels so it’s not the same thing. As for your trans, we most likely don’t live in the same type of place. Here in Japan or before in Canada, trucks make massive trails on the road, and wider wheels end up going in them and you struggle constantly to go straight. REally annoying. I know people in Cali for exemple who rarely deal with this problem, so it might just depend on your location and the shape of your roads.

I have definantly dealt with the following the road problem before but it was only on road trips not really daily driving.

Yeah for me, it was 60% of my daily trips that were made with roads like this... Quite a pain really. You have to live at the correct place to be able to deal with those types of tires everyday :)

Well the million dollars price difference could be invested and the interest alone would be sufficient to retire.

that explains a whole lot, and you definantly do. guess I've been lucky so far

Or for the price of a single 918, you could buy a Viper ACR, a Rolls Royce/Bently/whatever you want for a comfortable DD, an Escalade/Range Rover/International/whatever tow vehicle, an enclosed trailer, and a house.

With the adjustable dampers, I’ve been told the ACR is actually pretty comfortable on the road.

You don’t really think Dodge put more engineering hours into a 120k, body on frame, rwd, pushrod engined, wide tired evolution of the Gen IV Viper than Porsche did on their 1M, space frame, awd, hybrid hypercar, do you?

Yes, I took that photo at SF CnC. My 96 GTS was there as well.

Dodge spent a shit ton of time polishing a imperfect product. Pretty sure they’ve maxed out the potential of that engine and chassis though lots of engineering hours. Dodge was restricted to it being a parts bin special. Porsche dumped hella money on a smaller period of time.

I run 295s all the way around on my Cobra, so I definitely do. But similar to the differences between my Cobra and a Vette, there is a big difference between my Cobra and a 5th gen Viper.
